Rethinking Clean Textiles — Next-gen Fiber & Filament Solutions

* "Zero Persistence Microplastic" refers to zero persistent microplastic remaining in the marine environment after biodegradation, as tested under ASTM D6691.

35%
of microplastics in the ocean come from synthetic textile products — primarily conventional polyester.
70M
tons of polyester fiber are produced every year. Conventional PET takes centuries to degrade in any environment.
73%
of waste garments are sent to incineration or landfill. The industry needs solutions built into the material — not greenwashing, not future commitments, not offsetting.
Why THK

Engineered for
real-world application.

We don't ask brands to choose between performance and responsibility. Every THK fiber is benchmarked against conventional PET — across moisture management, durability, softness, and end-of-life impact.

01 —
Marine-Biodegradable Technology
Biodegradation is engineered into the polymer chain itself — not a coating, not a post-treatment. THK fibers undergo complete microbial decomposition in marine and composting environments — leaving zero persistent microplastic fragments in the environment after biodegradation (tested under ASTM D6691).
02 —
Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold
One of the world's most rigorous material certifications — evaluating Material Health, Circularity, Clean Air & Climate, Water & Soil, and Social Fairness. C2C Gold demands verified compliance across every dimension, not just recycling. Documented. Ready for your compliance, sustainability, and marketing teams. Certification documentation available upon request.
03 —
Drop-in Replacement
No re-tooling. No process change. THK fibers integrate seamlessly into existing spinning and weaving operations — FDY, DTY, and staple fiber lines. What changes is the fiber inside your product — and the credible sustainability story you can bring to your customers and compliance teams. That's the real differentiation.

What "Biodegradable" Actually Means — And Why It Matters Here.

Most synthetic fibers that claim "biodegradability" rely on additives or compostable coatings that only work under controlled industrial conditions — not in the environments where microplastics actually end up. THK is different.

Why Marine Matters Most

Every wash cycle releases microfibers into wastewater. Conventional synthetic textiles shed microplastics that accumulate in oceans for centuries — entering the food chain and eventually re-entering human diets. Marine biodegradability is the only test that reflects how microfibers actually behave in the real world.

Zero Persistent Microplastic — What It Takes

To qualify as truly non-persistent, a fiber must satisfy three simultaneous criteria — not just one. THK meets all three:

Marine biodegradable — fragments break down in seawater via microbial action (ASTM D6691)
No toxicants released — degradation byproducts are verified non-toxic to marine ecosystems
Non-ecotoxic — no harmful impact on aquatic organisms or the wider food chain
EU Regulatory Context

The EU's Circular Economy Action Plan and the 2018 Plastics Strategy are moving toward mandatory restrictions on microplastic-releasing synthetics by 2030. Biodegradable polymers that meet verified degradability standards are expected to qualify for exemptions under future EU regulations. THK fibers are positioned to be compliant ahead of these requirements.

Performance Data

What "biodegradable"
actually feels like to wear.

Our fibers were benchmarked against conventional PET using industry-standard tests at the Taiwan Textile Research Institute (TTRI), Intertek Shanghai, and the University of Applied Sciences Reutlingen. Here's what we found.

Haptic Performance
Softer Than Conventional Polyester
In blind haptic tests with 30 participants, THK biodegradable fiber was rated softer and more comfortable than PET across fibers, nonwovens, and knits — consistently and by a clear margin.

Softness score: 7.9 / 10 vs PET 6.8 / 10.
→ Next-to-skin applications that feel premium without a premium fiber blend.
Moisture Management
On Par With PET — Documented
OMMC final score: 0.61 (Good) vs PET 0.63. Quick-dry time: 4.7 min vs PET 4.5 min. Breathability (Ret): 1.51 m²·Pa/W vs PET 1.42 m²·Pa/W.

Moisture regain: 0.8% vs PET 0.4% — better humidity buffering, reduced static buildup.
→ Activewear that performs to spec. No asterisks, no compromises.
Durability
Full-Cycle Durability — Documented
Abrasion resistance: 120,000 cycles (ISO 12947) — intact. Pilling resistance: Grade 4–5 (ISO 12945). Tensile strength: 478 N lengthwise — on par with PET.

UV exposure: better color stability than PET under accelerated solar exposure (30-day equivalent).
→ Standard warranty claims hold. No product liability surprises.
Absorbency
A Genuine Upgrade Over PET
Liquid absorbency up to 2–3× higher than virgin PET depending on construction — approaching cotton levels. In nonwoven form: 2,543% vs PET 114% (DIN 53923).

Closer to natural fibers in moisture buffering profile.
→ A synthetic that actually absorbs sweat, not just wicks it away.

About THK

Rethinking
Clean Textiles.

THK Greenery Technology (森彥本草永續科技) was founded on a single conviction: that the textile industry's dependence on conventional synthetic fibers is a problem that must be solved at the material level — not managed through offsetting or post-processing.

We develop biodegradable, high-performance polyester yarns and fibers that integrate directly into existing manufacturing infrastructure — making the transition to responsible, future-proof materials a commercial decision, not a compromise.

Headquartered in Taiwan, we work with brands, mills, and product developers across global supply chains.
